1969 Ford MUSTANG MACH 1
Vehicle Description
After the 1967 introduction of the big block Chevrolet Camaro and sagging performance on the racetrack and dealer showrooms, Ford executives decided their 390 cubic inch big block needed help. That help came from Bob Tasca Ford in Rhode Island and Hot Rod Magazine, in the form of the 428 ‘Cobra Jet’ option which they conceived with Ford. It was first made available in 1968 and would be carried over the following year.
With Mickey Thompson setting records on the Bonneville Salt Flats and the Boss Mustangs winning in the Trans Am series, there is no question that Ford’s Mustang had come leaps and bounds from its tame ‘pony car’ origins. The Mach I may not have been capable of supersonic speeds originally, but it was certainly as fast and powerful as anything available to the average street racer and performance enthusiast in 1969. The 1969 model year also saw the introduction of the famed Boss Mustangs, which was notable for its considerable emphasis on performance, the growth and restyling of the Mustang design. The Mach I variant of the Sportsroof model was available with five optional V8 engines, the most desirable of which by far was the 428 cubic inch, 335 horsepower R Code Cobra Jet Ram Air engine, whose most distinctive feature was a protruding air intake sitting atop its ‘shaker hood.’ This option added only an additional $357 to the price of a Mach I and yet continues to be highly sought-after by enthusiasts.
