Today, it comes as no surprise that Pontiac rose to prominence as America’s third-ranking automaker, holding that position for eight straight years from 1962 through 1969 – especially when Pontiac excitement was heightened by incredibly successful marketing efforts led by Jim Wangers, which continue to define the art of effective product placement and intense media exposure today.
The Catalina 2+2 was a perfect case in point. With it, Pontiac created an automobile specifically targeted to buyers who required usable passenger accommodations, yet still wanted superior driving dynamics and cutting-edge styling. With its standard 389 V8 and trio of 421 engines, the 2+2 appeared in a succession of print ads with memorable taglines that aptly captured the essence of the car and the dynamic mood of the 1960s. Among them, slogans included “2+2-A fistful of Pontiac” and “Get in, turn on, leave abruptly.”
Best of all, the 2+2 had the substance to back up the sizzle, as confirmed by a Motor Trend test of a 1965 2+2, powered by a 356 hp 421 V8 with a four-speed, just like the example offered here. Motor Trend also described it as “a real driver’s car,” noting the driver-friendly interior layout. A great photo demonstrated the 2+2’s remarkably flat cornering at 70 mph through Riverside’s famous Turn 3 as well.
This 2+2 was restored some time ago with an attractive Champagne Gold and black color combination. Desirable features include a floor console, as well as an AM radio, bucket seats, power brakes, power steering, a rear defroster and a set of bright wheel covers. Complete with its Protect-O-Plate, original build sheet and owner’s manual, this 2+2 is a full-sized Pontiac to be driven and enjoyed. It is a terrific Catalina for the “big car, big engine” enthusiast. |
